Jack M. Caress, Ph.D.

Seasoned entrepreneur, academic, and consultant with a diverse career spanning business, sports, and healthcare.

Enterprise Development & Consultancy:

  • A successful entrepreneur having founded, owned, operated, bought and sold several successful businesses, enterprises, and industry organizations.  Those include Pacific Sports LLC, Sportech Corporation, Financial Logic, Carbon LLC, Triathlon Business International, Incorporated and numerous partnerships, LLCs, and not-for-profit entities. 

  • Established and founded the Los Angeles Sports Summit, achieving immediate success in 2019 and produced several successful conferences globally.

  • The Olympic Games has been a part of his portfolio since 1984.

  • Serves as an experienced and trusted advisor to private equity firms, hedge funds, venture capitalists and public companies, providing expert witness testimony and consulting on forensic valuations and complex business matters.

Healthcare:

  • Joined Caress Insurance Agency, led by his brother, as a Principal, CIO, Director of Strategy and a Broker/Agent for the expanding healthcare agency--Caress Insurance, LLC.

  • Expanded the company's reach to a national level, focusing on Medicare solutions for seniors and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for individuals and companies.

  • Gained deep expertise in Medicare, health plans, and the healthcare industry, now advising for a group of firms, investors, lenders, and private capital funds for this complex, disrupted, and vital industry.

  • Professor (Adjunct) University of California, Irvine, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Economics and Master of Science in Finance from The Paul Merage School of Business.

  • Earned his Ph.D. in Business Economics from the prestigious Peter F. Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University.

  • Produced and Founded the Triathlon America Conference from 2011 – 2013

  • Founder and Owner Operator of the first triathlon pro shop, Sportech Incorporated.  1983-1989, three locations in Irvine (2) and Dana Point, CA.  Acquired by regional bike shop group in 1989. 

Personal Accomplishments and Fun Stuff:

·      Completed the Ironman, in Hawaii, on four occasions (1.2mile ocean swim, 112mile cycle, 26.2-mile run).  Completed the Nice Triathlon World Championships (3 km ocean swim, 120 km bike into the Maritime Alps, 30 km run).  Completed over 150 endurance triathlons, marathons, and road cycling events.  Member of the Century Club of USA Triathlon recognized for both competing in and producing over 100 triathlons. 

·      Member of the 1975 NCAA Golf Championship Team for the University of California, Irvine. Team Captain, 1976.  Four-year letterman.

·      Senior Stroke Play Champion at Mayfield Sand Ridge CC in Cleveland, Ohio. (3 time champion) 

Jack has three sons and divides his time between Shaker Heights, Ohio and Irvine, California.

Expert Witness Cases and Testimony:

·      Estate of Larry Yarbray v. Amish Country Bike Tour. Case ongoing in Delaware jurisdiction regarding accident in the event which resulted in the death of Mr. Yarbray. Involves standard of safety for large events, negligence and jurisdictional preference.

·      Eman Tanagho et al. v. Reynolds Sports Management et al.  Case involving Big League Dreams and a deceased participant in a who was not administered timely emergency care and medical aid at the Big League Dreams field during a softball game.  Case involved best practices for emergency procedures, equipment and trained professional staff.  Case settled following expert testimony on best practices both for such a facility and required by the state of California and insurance carrier.

·      Joy Kish v. Galway Downs, Adrenaline Sports et al.  Case involved the largest producer of lacrosse events on a national level.  The lack of safety equipment to protect spectators by the Defendant led to a significant injury to the Plaintiff.   Case was favorably settled for the Plaintiff after a 3-year forensic analysis and case report on the elevated risk and lack of field tournament standards set forth by U.S. Lacrosse, the governing body for the sport of lacrosse in the United States.

·      Various Defendants v.  City of Los Angeles.  Vehicular accident during a mass participation event wherein 3 vehicles were involved in a collision and fault was asserted against the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).  Represented the CLA on which the testimony led to a settlement of the matter.

·      New York City Triathlon LLC v NYC Triathlon Club. Federal Court, New York District.  Retained as expert for the Plaintiff in a trademark infringement case.   Provided testimony, deposition, and affidavit to support protection of their naming rights for the protect their marks, domain, merchandise, and trademarks against licensing, advertising and confusion in the public domain.  Case was resolved in favor of the plaintiff. 

·      Crisostomo v. Runners Circle, Incorporated, et al.  Los Angeles Superior Court.  Retained as expert for the Plaintiff in a case involving the Los Angeles River Run 5k.  Prepared expert report, deposed in the case and summary documentation to support the plaintiff in a claim of negligence with the event’s organization. Plaintiff prevailed.

·      City of Los Angeles v. Carbon LLC.  City sued Carbon LLC (dba Herbalife Los Angeles Triathlon) of violating the contract with the City for the event.  Engaged to defend including testimony, forensic evidence, and depositions.  Carbon LLC prevailed in precedent setting case with the Chief Administrative Office of the City of Los Angeles.

·      Valentino v. Philadelphia Triathlon, LLC. Superior Court of Pennsylvania.  Expert for the defendant on a wrongful death suit.  Affidavit, testimony, and forensic analysis on the case regarding an individual who died during the swimming portion of the triathlon.  Provided expertise on course setup, safety, analysis of the death certificate causation, and related witness testimony for the defendant.  The Court ruled in favor of the defendant.  Case was appealed by plaintiff and the appellate court confirmed the initial summary judgment in favor of the plaintiff.
